Technical Artist

The Undead Labs technical art team is looking for an experienced technical artist to help us develop high quality artist tools and pipelines for our next big title. This role is critical to ensuring we have a strong foundation that will be scalable and maintainable for a decade or more. You will oversee all the back-end systems that tie our Art pipelines together and put your fingerprint on our game by developing industry leading tools and systems. A broad understanding of game pipelines and art workflows are key to your success in this role. You will co-design processes to increase artists’ efficiency, implement tools in Maya, Substance, Houdini and other dcc packages, and integrate the end products into Unreal. Core Responsibilities & Objectives: 

  • Develop a strong multi-disciplined approach with a deep understanding of art workflows and content deployment pipelines
  • Seek guidance and direction on product vision and strategy from Tech Art leadership
  • Work independently and develop creative solutions to undefined problem spaces
  • Advance the quality of art by developing improved methods of content creation
  • Collaborate directly with artists, technical artists and programmers to develop advanced software tools and scripts that enhance and streamline the creation of art and animation in the product.
  • Plan, organize and prioritize tools and infrastructure with production
  • Improve performance and quality of existing tools through customer feedback, unit testing, and development of scalable shared code libraries
  • Contribute to maintaining python tools development guidelines through unit testing, documentation and communication
  • Develop overall code base for scalability, maintainability, stability, and fast deployment
  • Continually improve skill set through actively tracking emerging game development trends and technology, evaluating competitive products and tools
  • Identify and solve bugs related to tools and pipelines

Core Traits (Skills, Knowledge, Experience) 

  • Proficiency with DCC tools such as Maya, Substance, Houdini, Photoshop, etc.
  • Expertise in Python, Qt and other common python libraries
  • Familiarity with Object Oriented Programming, MVC, Unit Testing and other common programming paradigms
  • Experienced in software development with demonstrated ability to create complex UI and tools frameworks with shared libraries designed for deployment and maintainability
  • Excellent understanding of game engines, tools, pipelines and development practice
  • Ability to work with artists to understand requirements and turn ideas into well designed tools with user friendly interfaces
  • Ability to collaborate well with team members
  • Passion for mentoring other developers
  • Disciplined at creating and maintaining documentation, standards, and best practices
  • A strong customer focus with the ability to balance artist requests with the needs for quality, efficiency, and stability for production
  • Ideally brings 5-8 years of experience as a Technical Artist developing tools and pipelines for game development

Bonus Traits

  • Experience with Unreal Engine
  • Experience using Houdini to create procedural tools
  • Experience using C++, C#, or other common development languages.
  • Experienced in UX, software design, and architecture


This position reports to the Senior Technical Art Manager


Physical Requirements

Close vision to monitors and screens, consistently working on computer equipment such as keyboards and monitors, long periods of sitting. Noise levels are low to moderate in the work environment.
