Senior Character TD


We want your talents in developing high quality, compelling characters that make an impact on our storytelling and gameplay experience. Undead Labs is looking for an experienced Character TD to develop advanced character pipelines for our next big title. As an individual contributor, you’ll collaborate with a handful of others to ensure our character quality is outstanding. If you bring state of the art and state of the industry character and creature development experience, we want to talk to you. You will co-design processes from the ground up to improve our speed of iteration, quality bar, and implementation of rigging and animation workflows. This is a high-impact opportunity to work in a first party XGS studio building the infrastructure to support an emerging global franchise.

 

Reporting to the Senior Technical Art Manager, this role will collaborate closely with our Technical Art Director, Animation Director, Character Artists, and our Animators.

Core Responsibilities & Objectives: 

  • Ensure that art and animation are not limited by technical processes.
  • Enable Character Artists to create models that meet technical needs and follow deformation standards
  • Support Animators to create user-friendly rigs and tools that bring animation and gameplay to life
  • Develop pipeline tools to streamline the character setup and animation process
  • Innovate advanced facial performance capability and motion transfer tools
  • Develop new techniques and workflows to maximize character production quality and optimize performance tradeoffs
  • Bring best in class process, knowledge, and artistic vision in your work and the work of others to deliver fabulous player experiences.
  • Create and maintain documentation related to rigging, character setup and animation workflows


Core Traits (Skills, Knowledge, Experience) 

  • A strong understanding of figure and facial anatomy
  • Experience developing character production pipelines
  • Expertise in character/prop rigging techniques and principles
  • Proficiency with DCC tools such as Maya, Photoshop, etc.
  • Expertise in Python, Qt and other common Python libraries
  • Excellent understanding of character technology related to game development
  • Aptitude for understanding artistic and technical requirements and turning ideas into well designed tools with user friendly interfaces
  • Excellent collaborator that acts as a positive difference maker for the teams success
  • Passion for mentoring other developers
  • Disciplined at creating and maintaining documentation, standards, and best practices
  • A strong customer focus with the ability to balance artist requests with the needs for quality, efficiency, and stability for production
  • Ideally brings 5-8 years of progressively complex related experience



Bonus Traits

  • Experience with Unreal Engine
  • Experience developing modular rigging systems
  • Experience with FACS based facial rigs and development of RBF solvers and other advanced character technologies
  • Comfortable developing tools and plugins using the Maya API
  • Familiarity with runtime character performance optimization


Physical Requirements

Close vision to monitors and screens, consistently working on computer equipment such as keyboards and monitors, long periods of sitting. Noise levels are low to moderate in the work environment.
